The brotherhood

Although it is not part of Semana Santa in Campillos, the Hermandad Sacramental de San Benito Abad is one of the six brotherhoods that make up the Agrupación de Hermandades y Cofradías de Campillos.

San Benito Abad, patron saint of Campillos and of Europe, is carried in procession every 10 July from his chapel to the parish church of Santa María del Reposo. On this date Campillos holds its patron saint’s festivities in his honour, as his feast day falls on 11 July, a local holiday in Campillos. San Benito Abad is believed to have been named patron of the town of Campillos on 11 February 1629.

Sacred images

San Benito Abad

The present image, in the Neo-Baroque style, dates from the mid-20th century and was made by the Granada sculptor and silversmith José Navas Parejo.

He bears his characteristic attributes: a crozier, a book with his monastic Rule, a raven with a loaf of bread at his feet and a church alluding to the founding of monasteries. He also wears the monastic habit and is usually shown with a clerical tonsure and a serious, austere expression, a sign of constant reflection. In the chapel of San Benito, he presides over the high altarpiece from a camarín (chapel behind the altarpiece).
