The parish group

Since 2026, Semana Santa in Campillos has had a new penitential procession, held on Holy Tuesday. The Grupo Parroquial del Santísimo Cristo Ultrajado en su Coronación de Espinas grew out of a group of young people who belong to the Banda de Cornetas y Tambores “Coronación” de Campillos and wished to acquire an image of Christ to venerate; this led to the founding of the parish group in 2018.

The Cristo Ultrajado with a crown of thorns and a red mantle

Santísimo Cristo Ultrajado en su Coronación de Espinas

It depicts Jesus Christ at the moment of the crowning with thorns and the mockery of his tormentors during the Passion. Jesus is seated on a wooden bench, with the crown of thorns on his head and his hands bound behind his back, alluding to his submission and to the violence he suffered during the scourging. The image emphasises his condition as a humiliated and reviled prisoner. He bears a crown of thorns with a goldfinch perched upon it, representing the Passion and suffering of Jesus Christ.

Technique: Stuccoed wood, polychromed in oils

Material: Cedar wood. Glass eyes

Date: 2016

History

The Banda de Cornetas y Tambores Coronación was founded in 2004; in 2016 the image of the Santísimo Cristo Ultrajado was blessed, and in 2018 the parish group was founded.

Processional dress

The nazarenos who carry candles in the procession wear a capirote (tall pointed hood) and a robe of blue twill. The capirote is edged in red and, in the centre of what is known as the “babero” (bib), bears the parish group’s coat of arms embroidered in metallic thread. The robe has a placket with the same red edging as the capirote and a row of ten buttons covered in red fabric. Around the waist is a rope girdle, matching the rope that binds the hands of the sacred image.

The attire worn by the section stewards, members of the Governing Board and bearers of processional insignia is exactly the same but with an off-white cape to distinguish them from the candle-bearing nazarenos.
