The brotherhood

On Easter Sunday the procession of the Santísimo Cristo Resucitado takes place. It is the sacred image of the Association of Brotherhoods and Confraternities (Agrupación de Hermandades y Cofradías), which organises the procession.

Unusually, the image of the Risen Christ follows the official route in reverse: it sets out from the Iglesia de Santa María del Reposo and passes along San Sebastián, Molinos, Alta, Vallejos and Real before returning to the parish church, in a joyful, colourful procession celebrating the triumph over death.

The procession brings together processional insignia and members of all the brotherhoods in the Agrupación.

Santísimo Cristo Resucitado

The sacred image of the Association is the Santísimo Cristo Resucitado, carved and painted in polychrome by the Seville imaginero (religious sculptor) Antonio Castillo Jarén in 1997. Iconographically, it represents the Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ, raised above the shroud, his body and face free of the sufferings of the Passion and death, with the wounds visible on his hands and feet.

History

The Agrupación was founded on 20 March 1957 and brings together the penitential brotherhoods and Hermandades de Gloria (brotherhoods whose main celebrations fall outside Semana Santa) which, under the various titles given to Our Lord Jesus Christ, to His Most Holy Mother the Immaculate Virgin Mary and to the Saints of God, have as their main purpose the promotion of public worship in the name of the Catholic Church in Campillos.
